An exceptional antique 17th- early 19th century Hungarian or Polish solid silver gold gilt and jeweled cloak clasp composed of slightly curved circular central medallion applied with plaques decorated in openwork with radiating acanthus leaves and scrolls mounted-on silver plate and inset with settings of various sizes and shape 19 faceted purple natural gemstones. The reverse fitted with a button and loop closure.

Two elaborate sides clasps, each adorned with plaques worked with openwork scrolling floral designs and mounted-on silver plates and set with various sizes and shapes of 9 faceted purple natural gemstones and connected with the central medallion by triple flattened chains. The reverse with fittings to attach the clasp to the garment. 

 

The central medallion and both buckles stamped on the back with number 12 hallmark. (The 12 Loth hallmarks were common in Poland and Hungary) 

 

This type of the clasp was attached to a luxury cloak or overcoat, (Dolman in Hungarian, Delia in Polish) worn by Hungarian, Croatian and Polish aristocrats during 16th -19th century usually fashioned from silk, velvet or wool, and was fastened over the breast. It must have been designed for a man of considerable wealth and high rank aristocrat.

 

CONDITION: in overall good condition, shows signs of usage and wear, two oval central Gemstones on both buckles with cracks and one stone chipped. Please notice that the pictures in the listing are part of the description of the condition of the object.
