Nicholas Vergette Ink Well or small vase. This is a pentagonal shaped, five sided 3 x 3 inch art pottery vase. It is hand thrown, the sides are then sliced off to form this wonderful shape, a minton year 1934 mark is applied to each of the five sides and then a matte glaze is used. The mark on the bottom is impressed and matches the Kovels mark 193G, for Nicholas Vergette 1946-1958. We contacted several art pottery dealers and no one could give us a positive identification, but it is a nice piece of art pottery, a treasure for you to enjoy. If anyone has further information, please email us so we can update the description for people wanting to see his work. Nicholas was very involved in the design and teaching of art pottery, Working in England and then moving to American to teach at Southern Illinois University. The glaze around the neck of the piece has a drip type effect and a closeup is show, a lighter blue and white. The rest of the piece is a bluish green matte finish. The bottom edge has a greenish tint and I have cleaned the piece, and it doesn't appear to come off, and I am wondering if he experimented with the smoking process of blackening ceramics. Pictures may appear to be larger than size, but I wanted the detail to be shown and examined. Thank you for looking and if you have any information, please take the time to email.
