A very unusual 20th century tribal wood shield from Pacific Islands region, possibly Ibanic Sea Dayak (headhunters)warrior. 

 

DETAILS. A circular wood shield carved on the center with two humanoid figures in a dancing pose and facing each other surrounded by elaborately carved wide border. The back of the shield is affixed with a wood handle bound with rattan strips. 

 

REFERENCES: A several related shields described as Ibanic Sea Dayak shields are published in the book Dayak Shields of Moroland Museum by Bruce Jenkins. 

 

CONDITION: Showing age and usage, horizontal split in the wood. 

 

The shield is, in fact, darker than it appears in the picture, because we had used a strong light during the photographing to show the fine details of the carving.
