Navy Commissions First Negro Ensigns Picture 1944 This is a picture from April 24, 1944. It is a nice black and white picture with short article. It pictures 12 Black enlisted men plus a Warrant Officer in second row and it reads, First Negro Ensigns, the Navy breaks an old tradition by commissioning 12 enlisted Men. They are lined up on steps at Great Lakes Training Station for formal portrait. Article reads they are the first Blacks ever to be commissioned as U S Navy Officers. Sadly, it does not give their names. Great Historical Event !! In mint condition. Photo is taken through plastic and may show wrinkles or crookedness that is not in the picture This magazine tear sheet measures 10 1/2"" wide by 14"" tall.
