Native Eskimo Coiled Open Work Basket with Lid
Hand made native Eskimo open work coiled basket with lid. The bundled straw coils are wrapped and woven in of dyed grasses. The texture of the wrap grasses is kind of waxy smooth silky. As you can see in the pictures that it has a sheen. The condition is good for age. The coils are firm and sturdy. The design is faded on the outer side side. There are a few unraveling strands here and there. The inside has retained the colors well but it is dirty.
I don't know the origin. I thought it may have been Inuit or Eskimo but I was assured by expert that is was not. I got it from a fleamarket in England. Perhaps it is from Greenland. In any event it is a real neat old hand made basket
