Or Best OfferThis particular Oil-on-Canvas of "The Merchant" was painted by the American artist Ernest Tuckermann in 1872. In all likelihood the scene is taken in Algiers and depicts a young and successful rug and arms dealer sitting on a carpet covered table. He has an arrogant and confident look on his face that may have been induced by the opium or by his achievement in business. On the floor is a hookah pipe that would usually be shared with clients and friends. On the top of a birdcage, lies two flintlock pistols, and on the wall behind him two more pistols and a dagger. Sitting outside of his shop is his bodyguard.
This is a very interesting painting that is not only decorative, but informative as well. Obviously Ernest Tuckerman had an eye for detail as can be seen by the many items in the picture from the dealer's shoes and clothing, to the fine carpet, oil lamp and outside architecture.
Ernest Tuckermann studied under Gerome, Barrias, and exhibited in Paris during 1870/1873/1878/1880
