Antique Alhambra Cabinet by Diego Fernandez de Castro (1847-1920s)
Our client's antique cabinet on stand from the Grenada studio of Diego Fernandez de Castro (1847-1920s) depicts a room from the Alhambra palace. A relative to Rafael Contreras Munoz (1824-1890), Diego opened his workshop in 1874 and operated a store in Granada, Spain, through 1930 that featured sculpture, plaques and cabinetry honoring the artistry of Alhambra. Approximately 63 by 20 by 18 inches. Lit from above by a standard socket and in good working condition.
Door signed by the artist with a varnished paper label on the interior of the door that reads "Mezquita-Completa con el Nicho del Coran Alhambra D.F. Castro Granada" which translates to "Mosque Complete with the Quran Niche Alhambra".
In very good condition. Some losses and restorations to the top and possibly elsewhere.
A similar cabinet appeared on the Antiques Roadshow in 2010.
