Leda and the Swan by Follower of Francois Boucher

Unavailable

Our finely painted work on canvas by a follower of Francois Bocher depicts Leda and the Swan, after the original painted by Boucher in 1741. Apparently unsigned and dating from the nineteenth century. Stretcher measures 17 3/4 by 31 1/4 inches and the giltwood frame measures 21 3/4 by 35 inches. The lacquered surface has considerable craquelure and there are signs of old inpainting and small losses. Frame has noticeables restorations.

In the story from Greek mythology, Zeus, having adopted the form of a swan, seduces (or rapes) Leda.  She was said to have bore Helen and Polydeuces, children of Zeus, while at the same time bearing Castor and Clytemnestra, children of her husband Tyndareus, the King of Sparta.
