Lane American Black Walnut Cedar Chest
Take home a piece of America's past with this this Lane American Black Walnut Cedar Chest, that was manufactured October 1, 1931. The company got its start in Altavista, Virginia when John Lane purchased a box plant in 1912. John encouraged his son, Ed, to start a chest factory, and unsure of whether their venture would be successful started the company under the name of the Standard Red Cedar Chest Company. In the 1920’s, Lane, whose tag line had been, “The gift that starts the home,” began advertising their cedar chests as “Hope Chests” .

Constructed out of aromatic solid cedar with beautiful American Black Walnut veneer patterns, the Lane chest is quite decorative. its lid has a splendid carved band at the edges; spiral half rounds on the front ends flanking leaf carvings along with a horizontal leaf carving in relief on the front panel; and a notched design across the bottom with fluted bun feet that support it with much grandeur and add just the right finishing touch. The lid lifts up to reveal the Lane Company, Altavista, Virginia label, and also shows, "Pressure Tested for Aroma Tightness Here", the Free Moth Insurance guarantee by the National Union Fire Insurance Company, Style No 44324X, and Serial Number 100131, which actually dates it to October 1, 1931. The Lane American Black Walnut Cedar Chest has the original key escutcheon, original stamped Lane hardware, measures, 20.75 inches H X 44.00 inches W X 20.00 inches D, so it is a perfect size for storing all sort of incidentals, and its flat-top surface makes it ideal for use as a coffee table in the living area.
