Johnson Furniture Company Federal Style Mahogany Double Dresser
Take home a piece of America’s past with this Johnson Furniture Company Federal Style Mahogany Double Dresser. Manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this piece is typical of the style of bedroom furniture that was produced in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Constructed out of mahogany with satinwood inlay on the drawer fronts, the double dresser has a curved skirt with slightly flared feet, and, most importantly, eight bowed front drawers with the original brass Hepplewhite style handles that open to reveal plenty of storage space. The Johnson Furniture Company Federal Style Mahogany Double Dresser includes the manufacturer’s branded label and measures, 35.50 inches H X 62.75 inches W X 21.50 inches D, and is in the original finish with appropriate wear for its age.

For those wanting a bit more information about the Johnson Furniture Company, its predecessor, Cabinetmakers Company was founded in 1903 by three brothers who emigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1887, Carl (who had received a medal for his cabinetmaking skills from the King of Sweden), Hjalmar, and Axel. After they sold Cabinetmakers Company in 1908 they started Johnson Furniture Company. David Robertson Smith, designer of Stickley Brothers Arts and Crafts lines, led Johnson, in 1928, into the production of Art Deco and Modern lines, and the company claimed that this was the first complete line of modern furniture produced in the United States. From 1942 – 1945, their plant was converted to produce a part for the Stinson Bomber aircraft for wartime production. After the last Johnson family member retired in 1963, the company was merged with Timber-Line, Incorporated, and retained the Johnson name. Holiday Inns of America purchased Timber-Line in 1968 and merged with Rose Manufacturing Company in 1983, becoming Rose Johnson, Incorporated until 1986 when they were purchased by La-Z-Boy. So there were lots of mergers and acquisitions and through it all the Johnson name still remained.
