Ajax Bronze Grand Tour Bust After the Antique -- 22.5 in, 57 cm

Unavailable

Our exceptionally modelled, cast and patinated bronze bust of Ajax dates from the mid to late nineteenth century.  It is mounted on a gilt bronze socle mounted on square pedestal featuring grey/black slate surfaces and frieze decorated with Greek figures.  Measures 22.5 by 9 by 9 inches.  In good condition.  The bronze has a wonderful, dark grey/black patina. There is oxidation to the gilt socle and numerous chip losses to the slate, consistent with age.

In Greek mythology, Ajax was a warrior considered the strongest of the Achaeans.  He played an important role in the Iliad by Homer.  Ajax was a cousin to Hector, and committed suicide with the sword provided by his cousin.
