Orientalist Porcelain Plaque Arab Gentlemen Playing Backgammon After Margetson
This exceptional porcelain plaque is enameled with a scene of three Arab men smoking hookahs and playing backgammon, apparently after an original oil painting by the accomplished British painter, William Henry Margetson (1861-1940). Plaque is beautifully detailed with ornate curtains, wallpaper and Oriental rug and finely detailed faces. "W. Margetson" signature in lower left. Rear of plaque is unfinished bisque surface, with no visible hallmarks. Plaque resides in a contemporary giltwood frame. Plaque measures 12 by 16 in (30.5 by 40.6 cm) and the frame measures 18.5 by 22.5 in (47 by 57.1 cm). Listed in the Benezit, Margetson was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.
