Orientalist Middle Eastern Oil Painting Eduard Ansen Hoffmann (Dutch, 1820-1904)

This fabulous oil on canvas by Eduard Ansen Hoffmann (Dutch, 1820-1904) is entitled The Abduction.  Signed in lower right corner, E. Ansen.  Stretcher measures 24 by 36 in. (60.9 by 91.4 cm), and modern frame measures 31.5 by 43 in. This work depicts a man on horseback with blond-haired female, abducted with the help of an accomplice trailing behind, and the scene of the crime in flames in the background.

 

This painting was purchased on April 18, 2006, at Sotheby's in New York in their sale of 19th Century European Art including The Orientalist Sale, where it was offered in lot 210 with an estimate of $12,000-$18,000 and sold for $17,500.

 

Overall condition is excellent.  The canvas is wax lined.  Under UV light there is inpainting visible to the forelegs of the white horse and long the side of the female's face.  There are a few spots of inpainting in the sky above the man's hat, touches of inpainting around his head and down his arm.
