This is one of the first types of comparison type machanical indicators. It has no dial face like today's indicators, no plastic either. The body of this indicator is marked "IDEAL TOOL CO. ROCHESTER N.Y. PATENTED". To date, I have never seen a broken Ideal indicator, that not to say some didn't get smashed or broken, but after about 60 year of use or just being stored, these indicators were made to preform a certain task, and do it well they have over the years. Sometimes simple is best, and to look at this indicator you can see, it all steel! This one is in great shape with a few minor stains, works good! It is mounted to a tool holder that is .25" x .5" x 4" long and has a vertical and horizontal holes, one hole of the two at each end. The side of the 2.25" long indicator has a thread post protruding from the one side, and the knurled thumb nut you see is holding the indicator to the holder/adapter. All in very good working order!
