Georges Bareau (1866-1931) La Poesie L'Histoire Highlighting Aviation and Automobile Industries
Our bronze by Georges Marie Valentin Bareau (1866-1931) entitled La Poésie (Poetry), is often referred to as L'Histoire, or Allégorie de l'histoire (Allegory of History). Cast by Barbedienne of Paris, circa 1900-1910s. 25 x 20 x 9 in, 63.5 x 51 x 23 cm.
This particular casting is the most unusual we've seen in our twenty years in business. We have never seen a casting with text or graphic designs on the subject's scroll.
In this work, the scroll depicts a flying machine and earth being circled by such a machine, with images of a battery or engine and mortar and pestle, suggesting to us this particular work was likely commissioned to celebrate industrial advancements, and specifically the exciting advances (and predicted futures) of the automobile and aviation industries.
