French Louis XVI Style Commode After Jean-Henri Riesener
Our incredible antique commode, circa 1890-1910, is an excellent copy of the design by Jean-Henri Riesener (1834-1806) which was installed in the private apartment of King Louis XVI at Versailles in 1775. (The original now resides in Musee Conde, Chateau de Chantilly.) Crafted from kingwood, it features fruitwood parquetry, marquetry and extensive armorial gilt bronze mounts, distinguished particularly by its prominent figures emblematic of Courage, Force, Prudence and Temperence. Measures: 37 x 78 x 32 in; 94 x 198 x 81 cm.
Overall condition is good. There are scratches, nicks, dents, some veneer losses, and some verdigris to the mounts. Marble top has surface dirt, numerous scratches and stains as seen in our image, and would benefit from a cleaning and sanding.
