Athena and Eros Bronze Sculpture by Felix Sanzel (1829-1883)

This exceptionally sculpted and cast group sculpture with parcel gilt decoration depicts Eros blindfolding an herm of Athena, and is known as Amour Captif.  Signed Fx Sanzel and numbered J257.  29.75" tall.

Sanzel studied with Fromange and Dumont and debuted at the Paris Salon in 1849.  He was awarded a medal when he exhibited a similar model of Amour Captif in marble in 1868 at the Salon.  Soon after, the sculpture was placed in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris where it resides today.  His Bust of Fenelon can be seen at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris.  His work, The Rogue, can be seen at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Orleans.  Source:  Benezit Dictionary of Artists.
