Fantastic hand-molded architectural tile in super-relief. It is 8" across and 2.5" deep. I am unsure of the maker of the tile, but is is made of hand-pressed yellow clay, so most likely an Ohio company, possibly Weller or Wheatley. The arts & crafts green glaze is slightly crystaline with a satiny hand and extends to the sides of the tile. The tile is thicker across the bottom where the toga meets the edge and curves inward to meet Mercury's helmet and face. The background is subtly carved and gives the impression of clouds billowing in the background of the tondo. The tile is in very good condition with some wear to the edges, including at the brim of the helmet, nose, lips, chin and hair as well as to the edges of the wings atop the helmet. None of the wear detracts from the image though which is quite unique. Please write with any questions or comments you may have.
