An Interesting, Hand Crafted Sterling Silver Square Tray On Feet In The Manner Of The Most Famous English  Silversmith, Paul De Lamerie. The Square Footed Salver Was Made By The Duchess Of Sutherland Crippled Guild. Hallmarked With The M.S Millicent Sutherland Hallmark, And Also Marked With The D.S.C.G Duchess Of Sutherland Cripples Guild Mark. Dated 1909. 14 1/2" Square.

Lady Millicent Fanny St. Claire-Erskine, Duchess Of Sutherland Was Very Much The Lady Diana Of Her Period. A Society Beauty & Successful London Hostess, She Was An Activist For Social Reform And Is Probably Best Remembered For Establishing The North Staffordshire Cripples Aid Society In 1896, With The Intention Of Training Crippled Boys In North Staffordshire And Teaching Them A Trade, Whereby They Would Be Able To Make An Income To Support Themselves. Initially Training Was In Dried Flower Arrangement And Book Printing, But Eventually It Moved To Metalwork In The Arts & Crafts Field. The Guild Became So Successful That By 1902 It Was Employing Over 100 Boys & Girls, And Was Renamed The Duchess Of Sutherland Cripples Guild. By 1910, The Duchess Had Opened A Store On London's New Bond Street To Sell Their Wares. The Duchess Was Very Well Connected & The Shop Sold To Many Wealthy Patrons, Including King Edward. The Designs For The Art Metalwork Were Taken From Museums Around The World And The Quality Of Craftsmanship For The Very Collectible  Copper, Silver And Silver Plated Items Remains Very High. The Guild Closed In 1922 When The Duchess Left England To Live In France.
