Egyptian Revival Specimen Marble Gilt Silver Inkwell Dated 1839

Unavailable

Our delightful Egyptian Revival inkwell is fashioned from specimen marble with gilt silver frame and features two scarab form wells and center well with lid decorated with a bone carved skull.  Original glass insert in the center vessel and no inserts in the other two.  With stamped rampart lion and capital letter P or D.  Maker unknown.  The inside of the lid at center bears an inscription that reads "Painted Rocks Lake Superior Sept. 7, 1839".

The painted rocks no doubt refers to the area of the southern short of Lake Superior known today as the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore which features an exposed sedementary rock shoreline in unusual colors of stone.
