Ebonized Empire Style Fauteuil Armchairs from Peter Marino & La Reverie Estate
Our pair of vintage, ebonized and carved wooden fauteuils feature unique padded, woven leather seats. From the collection of Sydell Miller at her Palm Beach estate, La Rêverie, designed and decorated by the influential architect and interior designer, Peter Marino. Each in good condition. 39.25 in tall, 29.5 in wide, 22.25 in deep with seat height of 18 in.
The impressive à l'antique design of these fauteuils is inspired by the renewed interest in the designs of classical antiquity in the Empire period, promoted by Charles Percier and Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine through their influential Receuil des Décorations Intérieures, first published in full in 1812. The original model can possibly be attributed to Henri Jacob (d. 1824), maître in 1779, cousin of his famous confrère Georges Jacob (d. 1814), on the basis of an identical apparently signed model by him illustrated in M. Beurdeley, Jacob et son Temps, Saint-Rémy-en-l'Eau, 2002, p. 80.
Ms. Miller is the co-founder of Matrix Essentials. Following the passing of her husband, she sold the La Reverie estate in 2019 for $109 million. The sale of her extraordinary collection of furnishings, art and antiques brought almost $18 million at Christie's in New York in June, 2021.
