David Colwell Acrylic Contour Chair
This is a rare "Contour" chair dating from as early as 1968, designed by David Colwell (British, 1944- ) and produced by 4s Company Ltd. of London. While its construction looks similar to other conventional cast acrylic ( lucite ) seating from the 1950s and 1960s, Colwell designed a unique process whereby a flat acrylic sheet was hand-stretched onto a stainless steel frame. The design was introduced at the RCA Degree Show in 1968 where it won a silver medal, and was featured in the important exhibition, Modern Chairs, held at Whitechapel Gallery in London in 1970. It resides in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Vitra Design Museum, among others around the world. Additional images forwarded upon request.
