Signed in pencil, verso. From the Prison Series. Probably printed 1970s. Self-taught in photography, Danny Lyon is a photographer, filmmaker, and writer. He has been recognized with one-person exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, NY, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona. His work also appears in numerous publications. One of his best-known series, Conversations with the Dead, documents life within the Texas prison system. With the full cooperation of the Texas Department of Corrections, Lyon photographed in six prisons over a fourteen-month period in 1967 and 1968, befriending many of the prisoners. In his statement of purpose he writes: "I tried with whatever power I had to make a picture of imprisonment as distressing as I knew it to be in reality . . . "
