On the site of The Ellipse on the South Side of the White House is the official National Christmas Tree. Every year since 1954, displays of smaller Christmas trees decorated with unique ornaments from each of the 56 states and territories the trees represent. Together with a festive bonfire, live reindeer, and a stage for musical entertainment, the month before Christmas is known as the Pageant of Peace. Each year a special program is prepared in limited numbers by the nonprofit Christmas Pageant of Peace, Inc. to showcase the events before the official lighting of the National Christmas Tree.
