Achille Brocot Champleve Enamel and Onyx Mantel Clock Circa 1880

Unavailable

Our mantel clock in onyx and gilt bronze with champleve enamel decorations has a movement by Achille Brocot (1817-1878) measures 15 by 7.5 by 5 inches and is in good condition.  It has a 3 1/2 inch alabaster dial with champleve enamel center.  The movement carries the maker's mark, an "AB" within star and is stamped with the number 4872.

Pendulum and key included.  Striking bell is missing, but we will supply a replacement.  Overall condition is very good.  There are scratches and nicks, and some rubber pad residue on the ball feet that we had not yet removed prior to photography.

Additional images forwarded upon request.

The maker was also a mathematician known for his discovery, along with the German, Moriz Stern, of the Stern–Brocot tree, a mathematical structure that facilitates the approximation of real numbers by rational numbers, and an approximation used in the design of gear ratios for clocks.  Most importantly, he is the inventor of the socalled Brocot Suspension which enables time keeping to be regulated by altering the length of the pendulum suspension spring by a key turned in the dial.  His other horological innovations included refinement of his father Louis-Gabriel's Brocot escapement and the development of clocks with perpetual calendar mechanisms.  With Jean-Baptiste Delettrez he established the clockmaking company, Brocot et Delettrez in Paris in 1851.
