Cesare Lapini Italian Female Neoclassical Marble Scupture Statue
This exceptional marble sculpture by the Italian master, Cesare Lapini (1848-1888) depicts a semi-nude female in neoclassical pose, wearing a skirt fashioned from variegated brown marble. Measures 36 x 14 x 9 inches (91 x 36 x 23 cm). Listed in the Benezit, Lapini was one of a number of leading sculptors who worked in Florence in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. He is known for is marble statues with allegorical, genre and ancient subjects and styles. His works regularly appear at major auction. The highest known sale price for a work of his sold at auction is believed to be a marble sculpture depicting Cupid & Psyche, offered in lot 464 by Freeman's of Philadelphia on September 20, 2007, and which sold for $95,000 including buyer's premium.
