A. Calavas, sometimes identified as Jean-Louis Igout, worked in Paris in the 1870s and 1880s specializing in academic studies of the nude for use by artists and students. This piece is a catalogue page from Studies for the Use of Artists, c.1895. These Albums d''tudes appeared regularly since the 1880s. In each published sheet the model takes up virtually every conceivable pose. The setting is always minimal and props such a ropes, urns or 'rocks' serve to indicate movement or force and hence the position and shape of the muscles. Calavas was far ahead of his time in 19th Century Paris. These series of multiple poses by both male and female models were at the time thought to be risqu' and erotic.
