Gustav Siegel Austrian Bentwood Rocker Rocking Chair for Kohn
This fabulous bentwood rocker was designed by Gustav Siegel (1880-1970) for Jacob and Josef Kohn of Vienna, Austria, circa 1904. It features a seat back with geometric pierced decoration and measures 21" wide, 37" deep, and 41.5" high. The seat measures 18" deep, 17.5" wide and the seat height is 13" measured at the spine (toward the rear of the seat). Condition is very good. There is a clean break on the left-most vertical slat, roughly halfway up the seatback which was previously repaired and which needs further restoration.
Founded by Jacob Kohn (1791-1866) and his son, Josef (1814-1884), the Kohn firm was an early innovator and leading manufacturer of bentwood furniture which produced the designs of important artists including Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner, Siegel and Adolf Loos. The company merged with Mundus AG in 1914 that also produced work for Thonet.
