Our client's rare pair of ceramic votive candle holders or upright lamp shades by the American artist, Doane (Doan) Powell (1881-1951) date from the 1940s and are in very good condition.  Each 11 inches by 7 inches.

Powell was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and studied at the University of Nebraska.  He enjoyed a successful career as an illustrator and sculptor and taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.  He is best known for his embrace of the mask as an art form, and upon moving to New York City this subject was his preferred.  He designed masks for many famous figures in high society and Hollywood, including Greta Garbo, Mae West and Huey Long.  His artworks were also featured in movies and theater productions until and likely after his passing in 1951.
