American Majolica Portrait Tile - Newburgh
A rare tile which I believe comes from the Newburgh Tile Works which produced wares in Newburgh and Tarrytown, New York for a very short period of time--from 1884-1891. (The back of the tile is very similar to Cambridge backs, however, Cambridge backs almost certainly are marked "Cambridge"; in addition, a 4"x4" version of this same image is published in Karlson as being produced by the Newburgh Tile Works, hence my attribution of this tile to Newburgh.) The tile depicts a winged putto or angel in high relief with intaglio-carved wings all finished in a bright slightly mauve-brown glaze. It has several spots of wear to the high points of the tile which were somewhat restored along its journey: notably at the fourth finger, the nose and two sections of the fiery locks; some edge nibbles as shown and light surface scratches near the upper right portion of the putto's hair.
