Masterton was a prominent and wealthy architect/builder, with a prosperous marble quarrying firm.  Hamilton was known for his group portraits of Important East Coast families, some of which incorporated landscapes, such as his notable piece in the Los Angeles Museum of Art.

William R Hamilton emigrated from Scotland in the early 1830s with the help of Alexander Masterton, as a trained artist in both London and Paris, and was associated closely with America's National Academy from 1834 to 1841.  His works are housed in both the New York Historical Society and the Los Angeles Museum of Art.
