19th Century New York Hand Carved Oak Masterpiece
This work along with item # 2506, can be purchased separately or as a pair executed by the same artist. These pieces descended in a family from the original carver who came to New York from Germany in the 1870s. These German immigrant carvers were famous for the carved tobacco Indians and the carousel horses that are extremely popular and collectible. When not commissioned as mentioned above, they produced decorative works such as this item and # 2506. The quality of the carving and the detail of the work is of the highest caliber. Only master carvers could produce items such as these. The most important characteristic of this work is that it is entirely carved out of a single piece of wood. There are no applied pieces. Everything is carved out of the oak block. Dimensions: 25" x 14.25", 3" in depth.
