This antique oil painting is a formal portrait of an 18th-century gentleman, likely a figure of nobility or intellectual standing, rendered in a traditional European style. The sitter is depicted with an air of quiet authority, dressed in a voluminous brown cloak with a red sash and a finely detailed white cravat.

His prominently curled wig and composed expression reflect the fashion and demeanor of the late Baroque or early Georgian period.

The painting is executed with a somber, muted palette, enhancing the sense of gravitas.

Signed in the lower left “J. Jones P.X. 1780,” the work is attributed to a portraitist working around that year, capturing both the personality and the social stature of the subject.

The painting is in good/antique condition, has some craquelures due to age, cleaned, scattered overpaint, several small patches visible on the reverse.

Nicely framed.  Please see the photos, the photos are part of the description.

Measures with the frame 31.75" X 29", painting 28.5" x 25.5".
