Scarce Revolutionary War Era Standing Wood Canteen

Unavailable
Professionally made by a cooper with one-piece front and back with raised surface. The sides made from a number of individual wood slats similar to barrel staves and held together by iron bands. The bottom features two short wood legs to allow the canteen to stand vertically. The top has an integral spout with iron retaining band; no stopper. Sides fitted with iron carrying rings with an attached leather strap (old but not original). One side bears an inscribed crown, possibly signifying pre-war or Loyalist manufacture. Dimensions: height 11", width 5 3/4", depth 4 1/2". Wood has shrunk and sealing material largely deteriorated, so that it will no longer hold water without leaking. An extremely rare Revolutionary War accoutrement.
