Iroquois Spike Axe Tomahawk, Mid-18th C

This style of spiked tomahawk was favored by the Iroquois as a fighting weapon and dates to the time of the French and Indian War. Hand-forged head is 7 ½" long and has a steel file inserted cutting edge, oblong eye, and square shank spike. Later hardwood handle. Many lives were taken in the American Colonies at the hands of spiked tomahawks such as this. From the Robert Wheeler Collection and bears his collection mark. Wheeler was an author and authority on the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. This museum grade example is featured in Lar Hothem’s “Ornamental Indian Artifacts on page 391.
