Heywood Brothers & Company Solid 1/4 Sawn Tiger Oak Morris Chair
A precursor to the now famous Heywood-Wakefield Company, this Heywood Brothers & Company Solid Quarter Sawn Tiger Oak Morris Chair, circa 1890, was made right before the 1897 merger of Heywood Brothers Company, founded in 1826, and Wakefield Rattan Company, founded in 1855. Designed by one of the a leaders of the English Arts & Crafts movement, poet William Morris (1834 - 1896), the characteristic features of a Morris Chair include a hinged back set between two un-upolstered arms, with the reclining angle adjusted through a row of pegs, holes, or notches in each arm. This Morris Chair has the typical brass rod that adjusts the back in four different reclining positions. In the upright position the Morris Chair measures, 40.50 inches H X 28.75 inches W X 33.50 inches D, and in the fully reclining position measures, 35.00 inches H X 28.75 inches W X 44.00 inches D. This Morris Chair features straight-lined horizontal back slats, a straight-lined seat rail, and straight-lined legs that nicely compliment the curved armrest and turned and incised armrest spindles, which is a characteristic feature of the original Morris chair. Constructed out of beautiful solid quarter sawn tiger oak the Morris chair has removable back and seat cushions. The Heywood Brothers & Company Solid Quarter Sawn Tiger Oak Morris Chair has the original casters, however it is not in the original finish. It still has part of the original Hewywood Bros & Co New York NY label; although the label is hard to read.
