Over 12 million strong the Yoruba reside in southwestern Nigeria, spreading into Benin and Togo with a rich and diverse art heritage. Traditionally the Yoruba were split into about 20 autonamous subgroups acting as kingdoms in their own right. Consequently the art of the yoruba would be a lifetime study by itself. This small bronze figure of a seated man would have been mounted on the top of a metal disc probably showing a family unit with several other figures to be used as a funerary reliquary. These bronze figure would have been made using the lost wax method.
