Signed recto in the margin with the number 352 penciled in the lower left corner; also notations on the underside of the mat, presumed to be in the photographers hand. Mounted in the original paper overmat. William Dassonville (1879-1957) was a superb photographer and a man of great influence who was acclaimed for his evocative studies of the California landscape and cityscapes. He was also an innovative craftsman and self-taught chemist who developed and marketed his own lines of photographic printing papers. In exhibitions his photographs hung alongside the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Clarence White, Gertrude Kasebier and other important members of the Photo-Secession. An active member of the Arts and Crafts movement, his images were frequently published in books and magazines both in America and Europe.
