An unusual sterling silver waffle knife in Whiting’s 1880 “Heraldic” pattern. The ornate design features a plumed knight’s armored helmet above a shield-shaped reserve, all encircled with swirling foliage. A complimentary foliate design is repeated on the reverse of the handle. The shield-shaped reserve is nearly always monogrammed, though this example is not. The blade retains traces of its original gilding, now faded to a very pale lemon shade. This server was intended specifically for serving waffles, but can be used for a variety of cakes or pastries, as well. Cucumber and tomato servers were similarly shaped. The back is marked with Whiting’s hallmark. Origin: America, ca. 1880. Condition: excellent, sharp detail, no monogram. Size: 8” long. Weight: 77.5 grams.
