A good, clean, First Edition copy of "Where do all the flies go...?", the journal of Isabel and Samuel Haigh as they emigrated to New Zealand in 1920, researched by Stephen and Margaret Shaw, and published by Little Ittle Publications of Malton, North Yorkshire in 1996. In May 1920, the SS Mahana, a converted cargo boat, steamed out of Liverpool harbour and headed towards New Zealand. In all there were 971 passengers who were embarking on a journey into the future. They were people from all walks of life but, for most, the only thing that they had in common was a desire for a fresh start in a New World, after the ravages, heartaches and deprivations of the First World War. Within these pages are recorded the thoughts and deeds of one couple who took that eight week voyage and who penned their own journal of events, describing their adventures and feelings, fun and despair, for friends who were to follow in their footsteps. Reading their account today is rather like peeping into the past through the proverbial "keyhole". A fascinating and unusual piece of work. Soft covers, 62 pages, signed by the researcher, Stephen Shaw, black and white illustrations throughout. Ref. WDATFG/C5.
