This is a very nice primitive tool called a wheelwright's traveler. Used for measuring the distance around the outside of the old fashioned type spoked wheels, or similar. This one is the type that was made by hand, forged iron and a metal formed rod stock handle. The tool was needed to measure the diameter of each wheel to then calculate the size needed for replacement. This one is in very good working condition, and has good clean surfaces, not rusty, no pitting, but evidence of hand forging process. Spins freely, and has a good center pin joint. A very nicely made 19th century tool! Well make a nice primitive display tool, or a great gift for a primitive collector! The wheel is 6" diameter and the overall lenghth is 11.3". We measure 19.87" circumference, or if we line up the graduation mark that is one per side of the wheel, we get a measurement of 19.87" on a rule for one full revelution from graduation line until it comes around once again.
