WEDDING CAKE TOPPERS, MEMORIES and MORE is divided into three main parts:
Part I - Symbolism and Tradition -- looks at the origins of the wedding ceremony (from early civilization to present day). Discusses how the ceremony has evolved, re-invented itself and become the ritual we recognize today. Clothing styles for bride and groom as well as the origin of best man, bridal attendants, flower girl and ring bearer are discussed. Superstitions including 'something old, something new'; where did love knots originate?; plus all the floral accessories we have come to expect are explained and origins discussed. Where does 'showering the bride & groom' originate? When and why is there a 'bouquet toss'? Why are coated almonds considered to be the traditional wedding 'candy'? The evolution of the wedding cake is discussed and researched as are the utensils for cutting the cake and the origin of the wedding cup. This section includes 50+ captioned, color photos.
Part II -- Wedding Cake Toppers -- is a tour through the years of the wide variety of toppers which have graced countless wedding cakes. Beginning with the 1890s and progressing to the present time, every variety of topper is discussed, dated, categorized, priced. Marzipan, celluloid, chalkware, spelter, plastic, gum paste, papier mache, are just some of the materials used and discussed in the creation of a topper. Kewpies, Cuties, Googlies, Military figures, white doves, 'Whimsies' and more are presented chronologically. What is the historical significance of the 'wedding shoe'? What is a wedding cake 'whimsie'? What is the meaning behind a bride marrying in her 'under garments'? Learn about the origin of kewpie, Diddums, and more. Find out why a 1940's saltware topper (#179) is so rare. Learn about the bride & groom "Dolls from Guam" (#426-A and #426-B). Remember how movie stars from the 'Golden Era' influenced the public's fashion sense? Well, they also influenced cake topper fashions. Read about it in the 1930-39 years of production. Part II offers a quick referral system to locating any particular topper - explains it in depth, and critiques the fashion(s) of the tiny bride and groom. A pricing guide is offered at the beginning of each section and gives the high- and low-end value(s) of toppers for that section. This was done to more accurately reflect the constant changes in the antiques & collectibles market. A "How To" section offers additional information and helpful tips on purchasing a topper - what to look for and what to avoid. Plus guidelines on restoration, maintenance, display and storage. Includes 475+ captioned, color photos.
Part III - is a walk down memory lane strewn with bride's books, marriage licenses, wedding favors, novelties, wedding greeting cards, invitations, announcements and telegrams. Beginning circa 1850 up to the present, this section offers a cross-section of the wedding 'necessities' and extras. More than 45 full-color, full-page photos and montages provide the reader with 'comparison' items. A pricing guide similar to the one found in Part II is offered in Part Ill to show high- and low-end estimates on a wide variety of memorabilia.
