Love of roses seems to come from a more gentle time that we like to remember and reproduce through table settings. Robert Wallace, the son of Scottish immigrants, was also the son of a silversmith, his father's vocation. His parents came to the United States in the late 1700's. At age 16, Robert became an apprentice to a spoon maker, and it was inevitable that when he mastered the craft he would make it his career and eventually found Wallace Silversmiths. It also was providential that he apprenticed for the most successful flatware and hollowware-producing firm of the time, Meriden Britannia Co, a much sought after apprenticeship. In 1875 the Wallace and Spoons Manufacturing Co created their first three sterling silver flatware patterns.
