Hand Carved Ivory - VERY RARE SET of an EMPEROR and EMPRESS with DRIVERS in HORSE DRAWN CARRIAGES with ESCORTS on HORSES - 13 POUNDS! This is a set of an Emperor and Empress in horse driven carriages with drivers and escorts on horses on shaped sectional ivory bases. The detail is absolutely stunning. The Emperor clutches his beard with his left hand and a sword with his right. His throne is enhanced with the carvings of 4 dragons, dragons on the body of the carriage and a dragon sitting atop the parasol above the carriage. The dragon is the symbol of luck, wealth, good fortune and wisdom. The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor. The dragon is the symbol of the emperor and ranks first amongst the 4 supernatural creatures. His escort rides a beautiful horse. The escort has a sword hanging from his right side. He clutches a spear with his right hand and the reins with his left hand. The driver holds a whip in his right hand and the reins in his left. There is a lantern resident on either side of the driver. The emperor, escort and driver all wear deeply incised armor and well decorated clothing. The Empress clutches a tassel with her left hand and a Ju-i scepter with her right hand. The Ju-I in the Ch'ing Dynasty was presented to high court officials as a marker of Imperial favor. The Ju-I tradition is thousands of years old. Originally thought to be a short sword, used for pointing, it later became a primitive phallic symbol given by the Emperor to a favorite consort. It reached its present symbolism in the Tang Dynasty during the 7th and 8th centuries. Her throne is enhanced with the carvings of 4 phoenixes, phoenixes on the body of the carriage and a phoenix sitting atop the parasol above the carriage. The phoenix is the emblem of the Empress. It only appears during times of peace and prosperity. It ranks second of the 4 supernatural creatures. A train of small birds is always in attendance when the phoenix flies. The phoenix represents the 5 Human Qualities - Virtue, Duty, Correct Behavior, Humanity and Reliability. It also represents sun and warmth for the summer harvest and symbolizes peace, beauty and good fortune. Her escort rides a beautiful horse. The escort has a sword hanging from his left side. He clutches a spear with his left hand and the reins with his right hand. The driver holds a whip in his right hand and the reins in his left. There is a lantern resident on either side of the driver. The empress, escort and driver all wear deeply incised armor and well decorated clothing. Please note that the artist has even taken the time to carve the individual teeth on each of the horses. The clothing and even the apparel on the horses are beautifully and deeply incised. The facial features of the emperor, empress, driver and escort are extremely well detailed and consistent with the theme of this piece. Both pieces have a lovely patina that comes only with age and these pieces are also very substantial. The ivory weighs 13 pounds in total and the ivory measures 13.25" tall and 17" wide on each piece. These carvings are 100% genuine elephant IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. They were HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s. They have a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon them.
