Hand Carved Ivory - This is a VERY RARE CHINESE GROUPING of an EMPEROR accompanied by his GENERAL, a WARRIOR and an ATTENDANT. This group weighs in excess of 8 pounds. This is both an amazing and substantial work of art. The amount of detail the artist has carved into this piece is truly awe inspiring. All of the figures are carved from solid ivory and this gorgeous carving weighs well over eight pounds! There is an EMPEROR sitting in front of an intricately carved screen reading a book. His robes are beautifully incised. Please note how the artist has taken care to carve the pages of the book and the folds in his robe in great detail. The GENERAL stands guard to the right of the emperor. He wears deeply incised chain mail and holds a substantial spear to protect the emperor. The general has a well carved sword hanging on his right side. The artist has also carved a fierce looking foo dog at the bottom of his garment. The Foo Dog is the symbol of good fortune, luck and wisdom and is placed at the entrance of a home, temple, palace or other building to guard the occupants from evil and harmful spirits. The Foo Dog is the emblem of valor and energy - the indispensable compliments of wisdom. A WARRIOR kneels at the feet of the emperor perhaps asking for a special favor. The warrior also has deeply incised chain mail and holds a large sword on his left side. An ATTENDANT holds a gift, presumably for the emperor, and stands by the emperor's left side. The attendant also had deeply incised chain mail as part of his attire. There is a demon carved at belt level on his uniform. A bonsai tree resides nearby atop a portion of a knurled tree. Bonsai showed up in China more than 1,000 years ago. The earlier species often had sparse foliage and very, gnarled, rugged trunks that often resembled animals such as birds and dragons. Some people thought the early bonsai were grotesque while other people realized the true bonsai tree meaning of peace, harmony, and all good things. There is also a dragon which has a lantern hanging from it and the lantern moves freely. The dragon is the symbol of luck, wealth, good fortune and wisdom. The dragon represents male vigor and fertility and is also the imperial emblem of the Emperor. The dragon is the symbol of the emperor and ranks first amongst the 4 supernatural creatures. This gorgeous group rests upon a planked ivory platform that is heavily carved around the perimeter. The amount of detail in the piece is truly amazing. This piece is engraved on the underside in ancient seal script reading "Qianlong nian zhi" meaning "Made in the reign of the Qianlong Emperor" (1736 - 1795). This carving is genuine elephant IVORY and in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It was HAND CARVED and HAND SCRIMSHAWED and SIGNED in China by a gifted master craftsman in the early 1900s. It has a lovely patina that nature has chosen to bestow upon it. This carving is UNIQUE and exhibits beautiful IVORY GRAIN which is guaranteed to be clearly visible. The ivory has been highly polished and exquisitely detailed. The quality of the ivory, the quality of the carving and the quality of the scrimshaw work are all exceptional. This carving was legally imported into the USA and can only be shipped to locations within the USA. This heavily carved and incised grouping would make an marvelous addition to your collection of fine ivory Asian carvings and should only increase in value over time.
