John Elder a son of a shoemaker, born on February 3, 1833. His artistic talent was evident at an early age. His mother encouraged her young son and and provided him with money for some art materials. At seventeen he became a pupil of Daniel Huntington in New York City. John's first portrait depicted one of the Vanderbuilt’s. He was in Fredericksburg, VA when the federal troops began shelling his hometown. John Elder painted eight portraits of Robert E. Lee. He focused on the confederacy’s heroes and battles. Also among those portraits was another masterpiece of Stonewall Jackson.
