About The Poster: A common WWI theme in posters, liberty bonds were war bonds "sold in the United States to support the allied cause in World War I. Subscribing to the bonds became a symbol of patriotic duty in the United States and introduced the idea of financial securities to many citizens for the first time." (Wikipedia) Here, Pennell calls on the fear of loss ad destruction - we see the statue of liberty in ruins and the New York skyline in flames - to compell the people to give money to the war effort. Pennell was an American artist and author. "Born in Philadelphia, where he first studied, he eventually moved to Europe and made his home in London. He produced numerous books (many of them in collaboration with his wife, Elizabeth Robins Pennell), but his chief distinction is as an original etcher and lithographer, and notably as an illustrator. Their close acquaintance with Whistler led the Pennells to undertake a biography of that artist in 1906, and, after some litigation with his executrix on the right to use his letters, the book was published in 1908." (Wkipedia) This poster is among his well-known and celebrated works. *The poster measures 28.25 x 38.5, and is in overall very good condition. However, it has been trimmed and the bottom line that read "Fourth liberty loan" is missing. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF POSTERS, PRINTS AND POCHOIRS ARE ORIGINAL, NON-REPRODUCTION PIECES.
