Eric Schmitt (French, 1955- ) Patinated Bronze Floor Lamp

Unavailable

This delightful floor lamp by Eric Schmitt (French, 1955 - ) dates from early in his career, having debuted at Galerie Neotu in Paris, circa 1990-1991.  It is crafted from brown patinated metal (believed to be bronze or spelter) and measures 71.5 by 20.5 in (182 by 52 cm).  Signed "ES".  Overall condition is good. Shade appears to be original and has some discoloration from sun exposure and rubbing against the metal patina. There is a recent break of one vertical members where it meets the horizontal top of the lamp, as seen in our image.  We may restore the piece prior to shipment to the satisfaction of our buyer.

A self-taught designer exhibiting in Paris and elsewhere for over 30 years, he was a member of The Barbarians, a group of young designers working in Paris in the late 1970s and 1980s, including the influential designers, Mattia Bonetti, Elizabeth Garouste and Olivier Gagnere. In fact, the abstract organic, tree branch and berry motif seen on this lamp can also be seen on important works by Garouste and Bonetti, including lot 151 of the Sotheby's sale in New York on December 17,2017, which is a sideboard cabinet entitled Belgravia, offered with an estimate of $60,000-$80,000.

His exhibit in June 1990 at Galerie en Attendant Les Barbares was one of his first solo shows. Over the past twenty-five years he has achieved solo exhibitions at St. Pere Gallery, Ralph Pucci, Dutko Gallery, Uniques, and Cat Berro Gallery, among others.  His retrospective exhibition at Dutko Gallery in London ran from April 8 to May 14, 2016.  His works are widely collected in Europe and North America, and periodically appear at major auction.  In 2016 Editions Norma published Eric Schmitt, a 316 page monograph with essays by the critic and journalist, Pierre Doze.
