Silke Grossmann is Professor of Photography at the Hamburg Art School in Germany. Her work is characterized by complex compositions and careful master printing. In this period she sometimes subtly combined positive and negative printing in the same image.
This photograph is titled "Marcia Bronstein, Muerenhof, Hamburg, April 1980." It is however far from being a normal portrait of the "subject." It is a vintage print, 21 4/4 x 14 1/8 inches on a 23 1/2 x 19 1/2 inch shoot, with the artist's signature and stamp.
This photograph was exhibited in a show of Grossmann's work at several major art museums in Germany in 1992, 93. The book that was published in conjunction with these exhibitions won the Albert Renger Patzsch Award. An interview with her is published in "Camera Austria International," 1993. A 1992 book of her photographs has texts by Frieda Grafe.
