This wonderful early Victorian sewing stand is in remarkable condition. Even more remarkable is that it is constructed of paper mache’, a highly regarded and popular method of construction during that time period. Paper mache’ was originally made from cotton or linen rags which were mixed into a paste of glue, resin and flour, then baked. The result was a product hard enough to carve and saw like wood. A common decorative treatment was to enamel the item and inlay using mother-of-pearl and apply designs in gold leaf. The shapely raised top displays a fruit and floral scene using mother-of-pearl and hand painting. Check out the 3 delicately painted butterflies. The outside edge uses a gold leaf border and a leaf looking border using more inlaid mother of pearl. The lid lifts up to reveal a complete silk and velvet covered interior of various sized cubbies. Each compartment was designed to hold sewing implements and objects such as thread, needles, scissors, etc. There is some expected loss or slight damage to the silk, but in general, is in very good condition. The center section lifts up and exposes a large storage area for fabric or current projects. The stand retains its original lock. Notice the continuation of gold highlighting and mother of pearl around all 4 sides and the storage compartment below. The stand rests on2 spiral carved pedestals and each supported by 2 legs. Check out the original gold leafing which is still in remarkable condition. The stand rests on its original porcelain casters. The case has only a minor chip on one corner located on the back of the lid. This is not obvious and does not detract from its presence. The frame is tight and the finish is in excellent condition.
